Topeka Named Among Top Ten Cities for the Next Decade

Topeka, Kan. by Greater Topeka Chamber (May 26, 2010) – Topeka has been listed among the Top Ten Cities for the Next Decade by Kiplinger magazine according to the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce.

Topeka joins other cities from across the country that Kiplinger.com says, “...are prosperous, innovative, and they'll generate plenty of jobs, too.”

The complete story will be in the July issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine which will be on newsstands June 8. Stories and videos are already online at www.kiplinger.com/links/bestcities with additional interactive features.

“It’s great to receive such a ranking, but to be part of this particular list of cities is significant,” said Doug Kinsinger, president & CEO of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce. “It’s the company you keep that helps distinguish our city in the eyes of businesses, individuals and economic development professionals across the country.”

The Kiplinger site encourages individuals to vote for their favorite city, with the possibility of earning the “people’s choice” award.

Austin, Texas received the number one ranking, citing services for small business including a dozen community programs that form a neural network of business brainpower to help entrepreneurs. Austin’s “fun” factor was also mentioned.

The ten top cities are:

  • Austin, Texas
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Washington, DC
  • Boulder, Colorado
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Rochester, Minnesota
  • Des Moines, Iowa
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • West Hartford, Connecticut
  • Topeka, Kansas

In the listing online at www.kiplinger.com, Topeka’s strengths were touted in copy and on video. The report says “as the capital city of Kansas, nearly 25% of Topeka’s workforce is employed by the government, providing a stable job market where unemployment has stayed around 7%. The city boasts quality schools, friendly people, good hospitals, a university and -- one of its biggest selling points -- low housing costs.”

Kathryn Walson, staff writer for Kiplinger, visited Topeka last month for three days visiting with elected officials and economic development, business, tourism, arts and education, and entertainment representatives.
