Capitol Federal gives $2.87 million to expand natatorium

Natatorium expansion

Topeka, Kan. (June 26, 2009) – The Topeka Unified School District 501 Board of Education accepted a $2.87 million gift from the Capitol Federal Foundation to expand the district’s natatorium facilities, the largest donation in the district’s history.

The expansion, which is scheduled to be completed in 2010, will include a warm-up and warm-down pool, as well as additional meeting space at the Capitol Federal Natatorium, and will allow the district to host higher-level swimming competitions.

"In the sport of swimming, when you get to those high-level meets, you need the warm-up and warm-down facilities," said John Dicus, Chief Executive Officer of Capitol Federal. "More and more of swimming is going to 50-meter competitions. The natatorium doesn’t have enough room to host a long-course competition. This would allow us to bring higher-level meets to the community."

Dicus said once the expansion is complete, the city will host four or five high-meets every year and can look forward to 750 swimmers plus family members visiting Topeka.

The natatorium is located in Hummer Sports Park, on S.W. Sixth St.
