The Great Overland Station announces Summer and Fall Schedule
Topeka, Kan. (June 26, 2009) – The Great Overland Station in Topeka is proud to announce the Fall and Summer schedule for 2009. These special exhibits change every quarter and range from pop culture, military history and cultural heritage.
From August 1 through October 30, the Great Overland Station presents, "All Aboard the Oz Express!" In this exhibit, children can try out a locomotive simulator and enjoy the huge G-scale model train, as well as watch and learn about the real trains that pass by the Station.
The annual Topeka Railroad Festival kicks-off Saturday, August 22. Held each year in August, the Topeka Railroad Festival is a day filled with fun and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Another unique opportunity is our "Harvey House Luncheon," which includes lunch in the style of the famed Fred Harvey Houses, complete with "Harvey Girls" and tour by a costumed railroad conductor.
Guests can also enjoy the permanent exhibits, including the extraordinary All Veterans Memorial and Corridor of Flags. A distinctive sculptural flame honors veterans and military personnel, surrounded by the flags of all 50 states and 50 American flags. Information about each state is displayed on the pedestals and is a great educational experience for all visitors.
School and group tours can be set up in advance. The Great Overland Station is also a perfect setting for wedding receptions, corporate parties, high school proms and other celebrations.
The Great Overland Station Museum and Education Center is considered one of Topeka’s greatest treasures. Located in the former Union Pacific Railroad Station, this elegant building has been completely restored to its original 1927 appearance. Since opening in 2004, visitors from all 50 states and from 34 foreign countries have toured this unique piece of Kansas history.
