Capitol Building Undergoes Major Renovations
Topeka, Kan. (June 26, 2009) – Located in Topeka, the Kansas Statehouse is currently undergoing a $285 million renovation. The Capitol is in the final stage of renovations and is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
Renovations include a new underground garage, remodeling of the basement and restoration of the bare copper metal on the iconic dome. Newly created space in the basement will host offices, a cafeteria and tour center for visitors.
"These renovations will make the Capitol a major educational and tourist destination," said Olivia Simmons, president and chief executive officer of Visit Topeka Inc. "The potential economic impact for increased tourism dollars for the state is great. Other states that have undergone a Statehouse renovation, and have seen that translate into increased visitors, and therefore increased tourism dollars."
The renovation’s completion date in 2011 will coincide with Kansas’ 150th birthday. Simmons said that other capitols have seen double, and even triple, the visitors in their states’ sesquicentennial years.
"What a way for the city of Topeka to capitalize on the expectation of increased visitors to our city," said Simmons.
